Busy little hands get messy. This is a fact of life. To keep it somewhat under control, here is a cute little apron for your artist. This reversible child's craft apron will take some of the mess away, leaving Mommy and Child both happy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 square yards of matching or contrasting fabric
  • 4 yards of colorful rick rack
  • 10 inches or so of Velcro strip
  • Thread to match
  1. Step 1

First, wash and dry your fabric, ironing if necessary. You may choose to use a sturdy cotton fabric for its durability. You want your child's craft apron to last for awhile.

  2. Step 2

Next, using your sewing machine, sew the two pieces of fabric together, leaving two corners open on opposite sides. They should be long enough to fold down, then halfway back up to form the pockets. They will fold down to about 1/3 of the square.

  3. Step 3

In this step, you will pin your rick rack so that it shows when you have it turned. Sew it into the seam itself. You may need to iron the seams flat after reversing the square. The open corners will be used as pockets. Now you can turn the apron inside out.

  4. Step 4

Once you've decided how long or short you want the pockets of your child's craft apron to be, iron down one side, flip the fabric square and fold the other corner pocket down the other side. Press the fabric so that there is a sharp crease on the pockets. Now, sew the corners, reversed, leaving the opening at the top for the pockets. Sew the rick rack around the whole corner. Flip and do the other side the same way.

  5. Step 5

If you can get your child to stand still long enough, measure around the waist to determine where you want the Velcro strips. If you think the apron will last some long while, make the strips a few inches long. Sew them straight out from the side corners, overlapping so the craft apron can easily be closed or opened.

  6. Step 6

Flip the pockets on your child's craft apron up and hand stitch to the desired depth. Finish your seams, iron on a cute applique or paint your child's name to make it uniquely his or hers. Enjoy!
