Things You'll Need:
- Trash bags
- Boxes
- Possibly a storage ottoman
- Possibly a toy storage unit with brightly colored bins
- Possibly underbed boxes or tubs
-
Step 1
Start by overhauling what your kids already have. Use either trash bags or boxes, and separate toys and stuffed animals into these categories: throw away, give away, repair.
-
Step 2
Notify family and friends that you are trying to reduce clutter. Grandma would probably be thrilled to get the kids a membership to the local zoo, while several people pooling money together could pay for quite a few of your daughter’s ballet lessons.
-
Step 3
Consider buying a storage ottoman for a main living area. Toys seem to migrate throughout the house, and it’s so simple for kids to put away their own toys quickly when there is a nice-looking box in the living room for them to close the lid on when they are done. Target carries a nice brown leather storage ottoman.
-
Step 4
Consider buying a toy storage unit with brightly colored bins, either for a living area or for your child’s bedroom. You can either have your child throw everything in the bins however they like, or have them sort by bin (e.g., trains in the large yellow bin, books in the small blue bin, animals in the small red bin, etc.).
-
Step 5
Consider using underbed boxes and/or plastic storage tubs, depending on the height of your child’s bed frame. These are nice for storing things like stuffed animals and out-of-season clothes.
-
Step 6
Consider using simple copy paper boxes, which are great for throwing miscellaneous toys in a closet.
