How to Deal With Heavy Credit Card Debts

Credit card debt is on the decline for most Americans, however, average American still takes about $10,000 credit card debt. Credit card companies typically charge exorbitantly high interest rates for debt which makes getting out of credit card debt nearly a dream that will never realize.

If you are heavy on credit card debt, how to deal with it? Try the following steps.

Instructions

    • 1

First, contact your credit card issuer directly.

Typically you will need to talk a supervisor, state your situation and ask for lower interest rate, lower minimum payment, write off or lower your balance, or a combination of all of them. You might not succeed by asking, but if you don't try, you will never succeed ever.

Second, consult with a credit counseling firm.

You have probably heard or seen a lot of credit counseling firms' commercials, however, don't believe them easily. Instead, check your local Better Business Bureau, your state attorney general's office, and your local consumer protection agency first to see how credible the credit counseling firms you are interested are.

Third, this is a final resort. If your debt is so heavy that you don't see any chance to get it relieved or paid off, consider filing bankruptcy protection.

With a clean plate, you can emerge from the bankruptcy court to rebuild your life, although your credit history will be blemished. So consider this as a last resort only.
