Step 1
Look into ways to save with your local phone company, the company you are presently using and other phone companies in your area as well. Ask about cheaper rates per minute and long distance calling plans that will save in a big way. Compare rates to see which ones offer a better deal for you.
-
Step 2
If you continually using your cell phone to make long distance calls, check the rates per minute, any roaming charges that apply and other fees you should know about. See if your cell phone service has specific times that would not cost you nothing to make long distance calls- Some cell phone service offer after 7pm or 9pm on weekdays for unlimited calling and weekends free. You can also check into other cell phone plans and compare their rates and services to see which one is affordable and best for you.
-
Step 3
Depending on how little or often you make long distance calls, consider using prepaid calling cards for all long distance calls or some long distance calls. Determine if this can fit into your calling needs. They are available at Walgreens, Walmart and Target.
-
Step 4
Use Magic Jack- this is a way to make calls from your telephone using your Internet service. Magic Jack is a device that you plug into your computer’s USB port. Then you can plug your telephone jack into the device. Your telephone would be connected to your computer. You can call any number, and you can receive calls at any time. Check it out at www.magicjack.com. You pay about $20 per year.

Step 5
Use emailing and instant messaging as way to save on your long distance bill.

on 8/30/2009 Great article. Another option is not to have a house phone at all. Using skype or only your cell phone can cut your bill by a lot.
