Hamburger buns are easy to make and will make your barbeque guests feel extra special. This hamburger bun recipe makes wheat buns using a combination of wheat and white flour, but you can use all wheat or all white flour if you prefer. These wheat hamburger buns are nice and firm on the outside, moist on the inside, and won’t fall apart when they hold a big, juicy burger.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup buttermilk powder
  • (Or ½ cup water and ½ cup milk)
  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp raw sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup wheat flour
  • 1 ¾ cup white flour
  • ¼ oz yeast (1 ½ tsp)
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tsp water
  • Cracked wheat
  1. Step 1

Combine the milk, water, sugar, salt and butter called for in the recipe in a small saucepan. Heat the wet ingredients on the stovetop until they come to a boil. Then set the liquid aside to cool to a lukewarm temperature (about 110 degrees F).

  2. Step 2

Combine the yeast, white flour and wheat flour called for in the recipe in a large mixing bowl.

  3. Step 3

Add the warm milk mixture to the flour and yeast and stir them together until they start to form a bread dough consistency. Add more flour or water to the recipe if necessary.

  4. Step 4

Knead the hamburger bun dough for approximately seven to ten minutes.

  5. Step 5

Grease a large mixing bowl, place the hamburger bun dough in the bowl, cover it with a cloth towel and place it in a warm area (such as near the oven) to let it rise. Let the hamburger bun dough rise until it doubles in size. This should take about one hour.

  6. Step 6

Punch down the hamburger bun dough and divide it into 6 pieces. Form tight balls by pulling the dough taught and folding the seams underneath the dough balls. Place the dough balls on a baking stone.

  7. Step 7

Let the dough balls sit for a minute and then flatten them with your hand. Cover the dough balls with a cloth and let them rise for fifteen to twenty minutes.

  8. Step 8

Make an eggwash by whisking together the egg yolk and water. Brush the tops of the wheat hamburger buns with the eggwash, sprinkle cracked wheat on top and bake them at 400 degrees in a preheated oven for twenty minutes. The hamburger buns will sound hollow when you tap them if they are done. Cool the wheat hamburger buns, slice them in half, top with your favorite hamburger patty and enjoy!
