Stop those annoying faucet leaks.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

You know the sound drip, drip, drip and you are thinking at the same time cha ching. That's the sound of money going down the drain 24 hours a day everyday the faucet goes unrepaired. To stop the madness you will need to disassemble the faucet. Yes you can do it. I will show you how.

  2. Step 2

The type of faucet with two handles is called a compression faucet. Compression faucets are much more prone to leaks due to the twisting motion which in time wears out the rubber seal at the bottom of the stem. It presses against the valve seat to block the water flow. Turning the handle the other way releases the seal against the seat and the water flows. Ok, enough about the operation of the faucet. Now let's get down to replacing the stem.

  3. Step 3

Turn off the water at the water supply under the sink. Turn the handle clockwise to turn it off.

  4. Step 4

Remove the fancy plastic cap that says H or C with a small screwdriver by prying up. Go easy it's only plastic and you will use it again. Remove the screw at the top of the handle and pull or pry the handle off.

  5. Step 5

Take your crescent wrench and remove the packing nut. Make sure to pad the nut with a rag to not mark the finish on the fixture.

  6. Step 6

Now, unscrew the stem counterclockwise and remove it from the faucet body.

  7. Step 7

Inspect the bottom of the stem for cracks, pits, grooves and fraying. If you see any of these then it is time to go to the hardware store. Take the stem with you to get an exact match. Install the new stem, packing nut, handle and cap. Now turn the water back on by turning the shut off valve counterclockwise. Turn on the faucet and then turn it off. See no more leaks. You are done. No plumber required.
