Getting your dog out in public for socialization early in life will both benefit your dog/puppy in making him more confident and secure and yourself and family in having a happier, well adjusted pet, however, it's never too late!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Training collar
  • 6' Leash
  1. Step 1

If your dog is nervous or "hyper" it is usually for one of two reasons; either from birth (heredity) or from his environment, the latter being the easiest to correct, but in both cases it is a lack of security and usually a lack of socialization. First let's talk about his lack of security or confidence. This could be for many reasons and may date all the way back to his time in the litter box. A timid puppy that is bullied by his litter mates may stay that way forever if someone does not know how to help him.

  2. Step 2

If you are new to being a dog owner; you may first have to obedience train your dog before you feel that you have enough control, or confidence in yourself, to take him out in public to socialize him. Obedience training will then be the first step to instill confidence in both you and your dog. It will establish a communication between the two of you. As you work with your dog each day you will notice a big change taking place in his personality. Once he understands what you want of him and what his boundaries are he will not be as frustrated.

  3. Step 3

Once he is trained, it is time to socialize him - the more he is exposed to the better adjusted he will become. Take him in the car with you, (short trips to start) to shopping areas, for walks in the park, any where he will be exposed to different noises, people etc. Do it calmly and patiently, reassuring him it is all right and soon he will not be startled by it all and take it in stride. Remember, short times to start and gradually increasing exposure.

  4. Step 4

Never try to over protect a nervous or shy dog by keeping him away from people and noises as he will only become more withdrawn and insecure. Depending on the age of your dog, and the individual personality of him, depends on how long it will take you to accomplish his adjustment and security but you will notice continued progress along the way if you are patient and consistent with him.
