Things You'll Need:

  • Surf Board
  • Thick Wet Suit
  1. Step 1

    Get mentally prepared.
Chicago surfers do not have the luxury of having perfect waves and water temperature every day. Get yourself thinking more cold water than hot fun in the sun. Surfing in Chicago will be more rewarding because of these additional challenges.

  2. Step 2

    Get your gear.
You will need to make sure you have the proper equipment. Obviously, you will need a board. You can get boards at various surf shops in Chicago or Northwest Indiana. You will also need a thick wet suit and booties. Odds are the water will be cold when the waves swell up to the level required to surf. It is also a good idea to ask the surf shop workers about any advice

  3. Step 3

    Review Surf Reports.
It is very important to find out where the best surf in the city is on that particular day. The internet and possibly even Iphone apps make it easy to track these reports. To track the weather and surf reports start with a basic google search and work your way to more advanced forums and localized daily reports if needed.

  4. Step 4

    Assure you follow rules.
Follow all local rules of surfing in Chicago by checking to make sure your beach is one where surfing is legal. Also, it is very important to follow all surf etiquette.

  5. Step 5

    Enjoy your surf!
