Most of us now know how to repot a plant. But how do you tell when one needs to be repotted?

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

There are several ways to tell if a plant needs to be repotted. By far the easiest is to check how often the plant is being watered. If the plant is drying out within a few hours and it's not 90 degrees outside, consider repotting.

  2. Step 2

You can also check the bottom of the pot. Lift up the pot. If there are roots visible from the drainage hole, the plant has outgrown its pot. Repot as soon as possible.

  3. Step 3

The third option is to look at the soil. Does it appear to be sticking together? Does a small gap appear to have been created around the edge of the pot? Again, the plant needs to be repotted.

  4. Step 4

A final option is to gently tug on the plant. If it doesn't come away easily or if a small tug removes the plant and all the soil in the pot, repot immediately!
