Install PC Power Supply

Computer components can malfunction due to sudden fluctuation of electricity. A sudden power supply failure can result in loss of work/data and in the worst case lead to inoperable PC. Installing a new power supply unit (PSU) is not a difficult task as long as proper steps are followed.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check out whether the existing PSU has really failed or not. Few of the signs which show failed PSU are:
    - Nothing happens when you turn on your PC
    - Your PC boots but then hangs up and makes beeping sounds
    - If you see smoke coming out of your PSU
    - If there is some burnt smell

  2. Step 2

Turn off PC and Unplug All Cables:
To install a new PSU you will need to open up the casing. For this, turn off your PC and unplug all the cables of peripherals which are connected to the CPU e.g. keyboard, mouse etc. Before opening up the casing, make sure that you hold any piece of metal to diffuse static charge as it can damage the internal components.

  3. Step 3

    Remove Existing PSU:
After you have unscrewed the casing with the help of a screwdriver, unplug all the cables of PSU which are connected to different internal devices like hard disk, floppy disk etc. Keep in mind which cable was connected where as you will have to connect the new PSU in the same manner. After that unscrew the PSU from its mounting and take it out. Make sure you don't damage any other component during the whole process.

  4. Step 4

    Mount New PSU:
Mount the new PSU in the same place and bolt it properly. Then plug in the cable to the different devices. If you are replacing the old PSU with the same model then this is not much of a problem.
