Things You'll Need:
- A new air filter
- Possibly a screwdriver
-
Step 1
Locate the air intake for your central AC unit. The air intake will be a fairly big grille that pulls air into it, rather than blowing out of it. The air filter will be just behind that grille. Measure the size so you know what size filter to buy. Filters are available in most grocery stores.
-
Step 2
Turn off the air conditioner. No sense fighting against a wind tunnel while you change the filter.
-
Step 3
Open the grille. There may be little tabs you have to lift, or knobs to turn. There could even be screws that you have to remove, but look for knobs and tabs first. Remove the old filter, and throw it away (careful - it will be dusty if you bump it).
-
Step 4
Put in the new filter, and replace the cover. Check that you have the filter facing the right way - the arrow on the top or side of the filter shows the direction of the air flow. Turn the AC back on. The new filter should start cleaning the air immediately and will help keep dust from irritating your allergies. You can even buy special high efficiency filters which could be worthwhile if your allergies are related to household dust.
