It's one thing to try other people's diet smoothie recipes, but how about making up some of your own? This way, you'll be able to use your favorite flavors, and cater them entirely to your own tastes. Being on a diet is difficult enough without drinking diet smoothies that aren't perfect for your taste buds.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a blender
  • a coffee grinder
  1. Step 1

In order to create your own diet smoothie recipes, you'll want to decide on what you'll use as a liquid base for your smoothie. Water with added ice, milk, soy milk and almond milk are good bases. If you use soy milk, the unsweetened kind has fewer calories. You'll need about a cup of your base liquid.

  2. Step 2

Next, decide what you want the primary flavor of your own diet smoothie recipe to be. If its banana, be sure to keep plenty of fresh ones around. Tip: Peel the bananas and then freeze them, as frozen fruit not only doesn't go bad, but takes the place of ice in your smoothie, giving you a richer diet smoothie recipe! Keep your freezer full of frozen strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and other fruits. Do keep in mind that the tropical fruits, such as mango and pineapple, may be delicious in smoothies, but pack quite a caloric punch. Plan on using about a cup of fruit for your diet smoothie recipe.

  3. Step 3

Choose a source of protein and fiber. Ground flax seeds are excellent for this. Simply put a tablespoon of flax seeds in a coffee grinder reserved especially for that purpose, and grind for about 20 seconds. Add to the blender with your other diet smoothie recipe ingredients. Other good sources of protein are nut butters, such as peanut butter and almond butter. Almond butter tastes delicious with peach smoothies! And many people enjoy peanut butter and banana. If you add a nut butter, be sure to only add a tablespoon or so, or you will have a very high calorie smoothie. For a diet smoothie recipe, you'll want to stay well under 400 calories, because around that number, you are looking at a meal replacement, which is fine as long as you really don't eat that meal! Another option is whey or soy protein powder. Just watch the calories. Whatever you do, don't skip this step, because the fiber and protein is what keeps hunger pangs at bay!

  4. Step 4

Once you get all of your diet smoothie recipe ingredients in the blender, blend for about two minutes, or until you don't hear any bits of frozen fruits clunking around in the blender anymore. Pour your diet smoothie into a glass, grab a straw and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Vary the ingredients you use in your smoothies so that you don't get bored.
  • If you like your smoothies sweet, add a packet of a stevia-based sweetener.
  • Adding more than one tablespoon of ground flax seed may cause unwanted gastric side effects.
