Step 1
First, talk to your doctor about the different types penile implants available; learn the how they work, how they are surgically inserted, and their risks. The more complex implants (pumps) produce better erections, but they require more invasive surgery involving the scrotum and abdomen, and have a higher risk of infection. In consultation with your doctor, you will decide which implant (if any) is right for you.
-
Step 2
Next, schedule your surgery appointment. Keep in mind that penile implant surgery requires at least local anesthesia if you get the simplest device (semi-rigid), and general anesthesia for the more complex pumps. You will also need to stay in the hospital a few days after surgery. So all in all, you should plan for about 3 or 4 days stay in the hospital.
-
Step 3
In the weeks or months before having penile implant surgery, talk to your partner about the surgery. You may want to bring him or her in to speak with the doctor. He or she needs to understand how the pumps or rods work, and know the risks for breakage and infection.
-
Step 4
Clear up any STD infections before surgery, and take care not to contract a new STD. Infection risk is extremely high with penile implants.
-
Step 5
Do not shave your genitals, since ingrown hairs and cuts increase the risk of surgery complications.
-
Step 6
As with any surgery, do not take any blood thinning medications, and do take any antibiotics that your doctor prescribes. These measures will minimize bleeding and sepsis with the new penile implant.
-
Step 7
On the day of your surgery, try to relax. Make sure your partner is there to hear the doctor's post-op instructions. Depending on the type of device you have, you will have to abstain from sex for 2-6 weeks.
