Do Lawn Care And Maintenance For Fall
Do Lawn Care And Maintenance For Fall

Get your lawn ready for winter this fall.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Well summer is going fast and it is time to start thinking Fall lawn care. The first thing I do is to kill all the weeds I can for the next 2 months. Weeds can be extremely strong and hard to get rid of if left to sprout back up in the spring. You can spray them individually with Weed B gon Max or you can use a Weed N Feed in a broadcast spreader to cover all of your lawn. Check out my article on spraying weeds individually. http://www.ehow.com/how_5308995_kill-weeds-yard-killing-grass.html

  2. Step 2

If you are spraying weeds individually then you will need to fertilize your lawn with a fall lawn fertilizer. A trick I use is when you pour in your fall fertilizer into your spreader mix in 1 lb of Epsom salts. Epsom salts increases root structure and blade thickness for a more healthy and beautiful lawn come spring. Cover all your grass areas thoroughly.

  3. Step 3

Rake up all those leaves and remove them from your lawn. Leaves laying in a thick layer can kill your grass and start a turf disease which you do not want.

  4. Step 4

Pick up any sticks and thatch from the yard. This always makes it easier to mow this year and next spring. Stay on top of this and you will be glad you did.

  5. Step 5

Fall is the best time to seed besides spring. It is also a good time for sod to go down.

  6. Step 6

Mow your grass. Cut your grass between 2 and 2 1/2 inches for the winter season. If you cut your grass too short this can cause a variety of problems including snow mold.

  7. Step 7

When you are done mowing your grass for the year it's time to put the mower to bed for the winter. Here are a few maintenance tips, scrape the underneath of the mower and spray clean. let it dry and give it a good coat of rust resistant paint to seal the underside of your mower. Your mower deck will last a lot longer when you do this. Drain out all the gasoline or pour in some fuel stabilizer. If you don't you will tarnish your carburetor internal parts (and believe me I learned this the hard way) the mower will not run as well or quit all together. Change your oil, sharpen the blade, clean or change your spark plug and wash down the outside of the mower. Lubricate all wheels and any moving parts on the mower and you are ready for next year.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always take off the spark plug wire before any service is performed.
  • Be cautious blades are sharp.
  • Dispose of used oil properly.
