Litter boxes. Messy, stinky, gross. But taking a few extra steps to maintain a clean litter box will help your home to smell clean, make you work less, and keep your cat happy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • baking soda
  • cat litter
  • cat litter pan
  • kitty litter scoop
  • plastic bag
  1. Step 1

BUY CLUMPING LITTER! Premium cat litter such as Fresh step cat litter works really well, as does arm and hammer cat litter and crystals litter. Whether regular kitty litter boxes or an automatic kitty litter boxes, you have to do your best to keep them clean of urine and feces. The best way to do this is to clean them on a daily basis. Now, if you have an automatic cat litter box, you can go a couple of days without cleaning the tray.

  2. Step 2

If you have a regular cat litter box, you will want to keep grocery store sacks -- especially plastic sacks. If you buy clumping litter, this is crucial. You definitely do not want to put cat urine and feces clumps in the trashcan. Scoop the litter with a litter scoop and put it directly into the grocery sack. Then, once you have scooped all the litter, you can tie the bag shut and throw it out.

  3. Step 3

To minimize the smell of the cat litter in between cleanings, you can use baking soda. Just sprinkle the baking soda over the top of the litter. Remember to add more kitty litter as needed too -- if the level of kitty litter gets too low in the pan, it will get mushy, kind of like clay, and stick to the kitty litter pan. Another way to help with the odors (espcially if the kitty litter box is on the main level of your home) is to purchase a covered kitty litter box. If you have multiple cats, you may consider buying more than one litter box.

  4. Step 4

Now, one thing that I noticed with my cats is that there was a lot of dust coming from the cat box even when we used a covered cat box. We are now using a dust free cat litter for that purpose. It is working great!

  5. Step 5

Every 3-4 months minimum, you will want to completely remove all cat litter from the kitty litter pan and wash it out. This will also help with smells and preventing unwanted growth of bacteria in and around the cat box. Cat feces has parasites and must be handled with care.
