Consider getting laces in two different colors because it may be easier to teach him by saying "the blue one" rather than "the right" or "the left". Tie alongside him if you're both right or left handed. If you're not, sit opposite each other so your motions will match his.

Have him cross the laces to create an "X." Slide one under the other and pull. Form loops but call them bunny ears with each lace.

Last, cross the ears and tuck one under the other but tell him the bunny is crawling through a hole then tighten. Always praise your child for a job well done even if they don't get it on the first try. Remember pratice makes perfect so you can practice these steps as many times as your child wishes!

It's not as easy as it seems, sitting opposite your child when one of you is right handed and the other is left handed, to teach them something using the mirror image. I tried to teach my daughter to crochet this way (the simple stitch is just a slip knot that repeats) and I had to walk away before things got violent.
