Step 1
Measure the size of the space you're planning to put the refrigerator. There's nothing worse than picking the right refrigerator only to find that it doesn't fit!
-
Step 2
Consider your needs. Do you use a lot of beverages? If so be sure to get a refrigerator with a large enough area for tall bottles.
Do you have kids? Make sure you take their needs into account as well. Remember, this refrigerator will be with you for a decade or so, so they'll be up to 10 years older before you get the next one. -
Step 3
Plan ahead, but buy only the capacity you expect to need. If you buy more refrigerator than you need, the extra space will eat up electricity.
-
Step 4
Find the most efficient model that suits your needs. An efficient refrigerator can almost pay for itself throughout its lifetime.
Generally speaking, top-mounted freezer models are more efficient. But be sure to check the efficiency sticker on the front of the refrigerator. -
Step 5
Consider a side-by-side model if you have a tight kitchen with little clearance.
-
Step 6
If you use a lot of ice or ice water, consider getting a refrigerator with those devices already built into the door. Every time you open the door you're letting cool air out, so your aim is to keep the door closed as much as possible.
-
Step 7
If you don't want the old refrigerator any more, ask the dealer if they will take your old refrigerator away.
