The Illinois Tollway has implemented an all-electronic toll interchange on Interstate 294 and Interstate 57. Instead of paying tolls in cash, travelers need an I-Pass transponder on their vehicles, which means an account must be set up with the Illinois Tollway. A deposit is required to open the electronic account and then customers are responsible for replenishing the account as needed.
Obtaining the I-Pass In Person
Illinois commuters can pick up an I-Pass at one of the Illinois Tollway's customer service centers. Locations are available in Chicago Southland, O'Hare, Lake Forest, Belvidere, Hinsdale and DeKalb. The Tollway's Central Administration Building in Downers Grove is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. It's also possible to buy the I-Pass at several Illinois retail locations. Three Road Ranger travel centers in northwest Illinois have it available as well as Jewel-Osco stores.
Ordering the I-Pass
It's also possible to obtain the I-Pass online, over the phone or through the mail. To order online, you'll need an email address, a driver's license, information about your car, such as the make, model and the license plate number, and a credit or debit card. Order over the phone by calling 1-800-824-7277. To get an I-Pass by mail, print out an application and send it with a check or money order made out to Illinois Tollway to I-Pass Customer Service, 2700 Ogden Ave., Downers Grover, IL 60515. These methods will take about 14 days.
