Step 1
There are several ways to understand the points system in Nascar racing. First, the finishing positions.
The race winner gets 185 points. If he leads the most laps, he'll receive and extra 5 points, which makes his total 190.
Positions 1 through 5 in the finishing order of the race has a differential of 5 points. First place: 185, 2nd: 170, 3rd: 165, etc.
Now these can be different if any of these top 5 finishers leads a single lap or the most laps. If you lead the most laps you receive 10 bonus points. -
Step 2
From position 6 through 10th, the point differential is 4 points. 6th place is 150 points, 7th is 146 and so on. Each spot lower is 4 points deducted from the 6th place finish, unless of course you lead a lap or the most laps.
-
Step 3
From position 11th to 43, the point differential is 3 points. It uses the same principal as above.
If Nascar fines a team for unapproved parts or cheating, they can deduct however points they deem appropriate for whatever the team did.
If a driver starts a race, and is sick, they can have a relief driver come in and finish the race in his car. The driver who started the race still gets the points for wherever the relief driver finishes. -
Step 4
The Chase for the Championship, which will most likely be Tony Stewart this year... ha ha, starts after the 26th race of the year. The first 26 races, you want to win and finish and gain the most points you can. Race wins gives you 10 bonus points in the chase. There are 12 drivers that can qualify to race for the championship. Every driver in the chase starts off with 5,000 points. But, if you win 3 races for example, you'll have 5,030.. because those 3 races you won gave you 30 points. You could be first in points after the 26th race, but if someone else has one 4 races to your 3, they will start the chase in front of you by ten points. That is why it is crucial to have wins, and in the chase, the more consistent finishes you have, the better it will be for you. You can win the Championship and not even win a race. If you have more points through better average finishes than the rest, you'll have gained the most points. I hope this explains it well. Go, Tony! lol.
