Identity theft is increasing day by day especially with the extensive use of credit cards and the internet. Identity thefts can cause a lot of problems for the person. For those who want to prevent identity theft, there are a number ways to do so. Given are some ways to prevent identity theft:

  1. Step 1

    Keep your social security number safe: never keep your social security card number in your wallet or purse as social security number are an easy way for identity theft. If someone asks you for the number, never give it out. In some cases you do have to give it out but avoid getting it out often.

  2. Step 2

    Never give out social security card number: If someone calls you and ask you for the number, never ever give them the number; defrauds mostly take place on the phone. You can ask for call back number or ask for a supervisor. Similarly, avoid giving security number or account number through the email.

  3. Step 3

    Shred paper: Never throw copies of loan application, credit card bills, receipts, bank statements or papers having your personal information away simply. Instead make it a habit of shredding them first.

  4. Step 4

    Often change passwords and PIN: Changing passwords and PIN often prevents anyone from giving access to the account. Also, avoid writing down your credit card number or passwords.

  5. Step 5

    Immediately report stolen or lost credit cards: This ensures that thieve is not able to charge you up anything and your account is closed immediately.

  6. Step 6

    Keep a check on credit card statements: Read through your credit card statements carefully. Take a few minutes to check through. This is to ensure that there is no fraud activity. If you suspect a fraud activity, call the customer service center immediately. Ensure that you get a letter from credit card company which states that the charges were not incurred by you.
