The Audio/Video industry normally recommends replacing a worn stylus(needle) after approximately 1000 hours. Most people (other than Adrian Monk) don't keep a running tab on this information.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • One record album in good condition containing a male vocal throughout the entire record.
  1. Step 1

Find a record album containing a single male vocal throughout the entire album. James Taylor or John Mayer would be good examples.

  2. Step 2

Place record on turntable and move tone arm to the last track or song on the record.

  3. Step 3

Listen to the sound of the male voice as the last song is being played. A worn stylus (needle) will add a raspy, garbled edge to the voice. A stylus in good condition will sound clear and distinctive without that irritating raspy sound. If the described sound is present, it is best to stop plying your albums as soon as possible. A worn stylus is becoming misshapen and will start carving its own path into the record groove which will permanently distort the sound of the record album.
