You can use a wireless network the same way as a wired network; to access any device that is connected to your network, printers, other computers and files that are on any computer that is on the network.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with wireless networking support or network adapter (for older computers without built-in wireless support)
  • A wireless router
  • A broadband internet connection
  1. Step 1

Shop for a wireless wireless router.
    * You will see as you shop for your router, wireless network equipment that supports one of the these wireless networking standards
    802.11a
    802.11b
    802.11g
    * The 802.11g standard is the most compatible standard and is recommended by most for this reason.
    * You will also need to purchase a wireless network adapter for any computer that does not have built in wireless support or capabilities. You should purchase a network adapter that is, preferably, made by the same manufacturer as your router; this will make setup less complicated.

  2. Step 2

Unplug your broadband modem (cable/dsl) power cord.

  3. Step 3

Connect your broadband modem to your wireless router and then plug the power cord for your modem back in.

  4. Step 4

Configure your router. You may need to temporarily connect your computer to your router. Please check your manufacturer's documentation for further assistance. For Linksys routers any port that is not labeled WLAN or WAN will work for this task.

  5. Step 5

Connect all of your computers to your network. Once everything is setup your computer will automatically detect the wireless network. If your computer requires a network adapter, insert it into the proper port (USB) before turning on your computer(s).

  6. Step 6

You are now free to surf the internet from any part of your house, even the front yard. Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
