Step 1
Firstly, start the process of tug of war with something. Do not use something that he/she is not allowed to chew on.
-
Step 2
Wait for a certain time when you feel is write during the tug of war, then freeze and be as still as you possible can. As you are still keep your hand on the toy.
-
Step 3
Next, give the dog something instead of the toy. Sort of like a difference in interest type idea. Trade the dog a treat for the toy. But make sure once the dog releases the tug of war item to reward him/her somehow.
-
Step 4
The dog should see this as an equation. "Playing tug of war is fun, but once I give up the toy I also get a treat." You can also try this with different toys to really test the dog. Use different toys for the tug of war and flip flop them in and out with the treats.
-
Step 5
You need to remember that this should have a command for the dog to remember. Sayings such as, "drop, down, let go all are good." This whole process should make your dog very happy to drop items after a time period.
