Dog itching but no fleas?
Dog itching but no fleas?

Is your dog itching but no fleas can be found? Hay fever or food allergies may be the culprit. Read on for 5 ways to stop the itch.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Over-the-counter remedy. If your dog is itching but no fleas can be found, the itching may be caused by hay fever and can be treated with an antihistamine such as Benadryl. Most veterenarians recommend giving one to three milligrams for every pound of weight of your dog. Ask your vet for precise dosing instructions.

  2. Step 2

A cool bath. For temporary relief from itching, a cool bath can soothe your itchy dogy. The relief will last from several hours to several days. Keep the dog in the cool water for about 10 minutes.

  3. Step 3

An oatmeal bath. Dog itching but no fleas can be remedied the natural way. Wash your dog with oatmeal shampoo or put colloidal oatmeal in the bath water. Aveeno is a popular colloidal oatmeal bath that can be used. If you don't have colloidal oatmeal, use regualar oatmeal tied up in an old sock so the water can run through it.

  4. Step 4

Moisturizer. Use a moisturizer like Alpha-Keri Oil to relieve itchy skin. Dilute it in the bath water or use it as an after-bath rinse. One tablespoon per galon of water works well. It can also be used as a once-a-week spray for your dog to help relieve the itching problem.

  5. Step 5

Pet supplements. Pet supplements with essential fatty acids can help calm itchy skin while adding shine to their coat. Lineoleic acid is a popular ingredient in the supplements that are available in pet stores.

  6. Step 6

on 11/28/2009 Good info. My Golden Retriever suffers from these very symptoms and we struggle with giving her some kind of relief every year. We know its allergies, give her Benadryl, and some supplements. Oatmeal bath is a good idea, we'll try it!
