These are instructions on how to sew on a button with holes so it will stay on your clothing for a long time. If a button does not have a shank (or anchor), one should be added with thread.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Needle
  • Thread
  1. Step 1

Thread a needle and tie a knot at the end. Make sure the thread is appropriate for the material that’s being sewed on. A heavier thread is needed for wool coats or jackets.

  2. Step 2

Pull the needle up at the spot where the button should be. If thread was left where the button came off, use that as a guide and then remove it. Pull the needle up through a hole in the button.

  3. Step 3

Use whatever pattern the other buttons have - either a criss-cross or a parallel pattern.

  4. Step 4

Keep sewing in this pattern several times. Make the last stitch with the needle going down into the button hole. Pull the needle up but not through a hole.

  5. Step 5

Wind the thread a few times around the button to form a shank. This is needed to make it easier when the button is pulled through the buttonhole.

  6. Step 6

Working only on the top, push the needle through from one end of the shaft to the other and make a knot. Repeat and cut the thread.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the thread color as close to the thread in the other buttons.
