With all the talk these days about eco-friendly living and being sustainable, shouldn’t that also apply to our household furnishings as well? There are many options available to those that want to outfit their homes in an eco-friendly way. The idea of mud colored and drab eco furniture is old news. It is time to recycle that old idea and embrace eco-friendly, sustainable household furniture. Here are some tips on purchasing eco-friendly furnishings.

    Do not purchase so much furniture in the first place. If you are not using the dining room on a regular basis why concern yourself over having a dining room set that seats eight. A simple table with a couple of chairs will suffice.

    Purchase quality made pieces of furniture. Don’t worry about what is trendy today. It won’t be trendy in a year. Look for timeless classic pieces that are built well and will withstand the test of time.

  3. Step 3

    Look for furniture made from reclaimed wood. This is material that has been used before such as beams from older buildings as well as old furniture. Purchasing reclaimed wood pieces is making an impact by not having to cut down trees needlessly. Many of these pieces of furniture are one of kind beautiful additions to any home.

  4. Step 4

    Consider also other sustainable materials for your home décor. Bamboo and cork materials are beautifully made from self sustaining sources. Be on the lookout for FSC or Rainforest Alliance certification that verifies the sustainability of a product.

  5. Step 5

    Shop at second hand stores as well. Keep a good usable piece of furniture out of the landfill by giving it a new home.
