How to Waterproof A Wooden Gate

Get out a large plastic bowl or a bucket, whichever is handier. This will be easier to clean up when you are finished, and it will not break if dropped.

Pour any brand of vegetable oil into the container.

Brush the vegetable oil onto your wooden gate. Be generous when applying the oil and literally saturate the area you are painting. Always paint with the wood grain.

When you have oiled the entire wooden part of the gate, allow the oil to soak in for about an hour then repeat.

Repeat this process twice per year, as needed.
