Hanging plants should always be at eye level or above around windows and in sunny corners of rooms.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • hanging basket
  • moss
  • plastic sheeting with holes
  • potting soil
  • pruning scissors
  • toggle bolts
  • pulley and chain (optional)
  • plants suitable for hanging (see tips)
  1. Step 1

To prepare your hanging basket, remove some of the chains so that you have free access to all areas of the basket. Line the basket with a plastic sheet with holes for drainage and about 2 inches of damp moss, sphagnum moss seems to work the best for me.

  2. Step 2

Add your potting soil and trim the excess plastic to just inside the rim of the basket.

  3. Step 3

In the center of the basket, choose upright plants. Add soil as necessary to hold them in place. Use trailing plants around the edges. Make sure that all of the plants that you use in a basket have the same water and feeding needs.

  4. Step 4

Suspend your basket from the ceiling with a wire, macramé holder or a chain. The support needs to be anchored with a toggle bolt so that it does not fall through plaster. If you want to be able to easily lower the plant for watering and care, install a pulley.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hanging plants should be checked every few days and watered as they need it.
  • Turn your hanging plants every 2 weeks so that hey get equal light exposure on all sides.
  • Some plants suitable for hanging include, oxalis, Christmas cactus, sword fern, maidenhair fern, Tahitian bridal veil, spider plants, trailing fuchsias, wandering Jew, English ivy, purple heart, asparagus fern, trailing figs and burro's tail.
