Step 1
The best place to start is at an athletic retail store that sells brands like Nike, New Balance, Puma, and Adidas. You will want to stick with brand name running shoes as you do not want to skimp by purchasing generics brands. Your feet are important and you'll want to spend on average $100 for a good pair.
-
Step 2
Talk to the salesperson and tell them where you'll be running. Do you run mostly on a treadmill or are you running outside on asphalt? Outdoor runners require shock absorber shoes that reduce the impact that running on asphalt can place on the knees and joints. Nike makes a great line of running shoes called Shox and they're very popular among both men and women runners.

Step 3
Make sure to select the proper size running shoes. You don't want them too tight, or too loose but a good reference is to buy them a half size bigger then you would a regular pair of shoes because feet often swell while running. If they are already to too tight starting off your feet will blister and ache.

Step 4
It's important for runners to replace their sneakers every 300-400 miles due to wear and tear. You may want to save money by keeping your shoes longer, but avid runners need to think about the long-term money they will save by protecting their feet.
