How to Troubleshoot a Rear Projection LCD TV

A rear projection LCD TV works by projecting a beam of light through a special chip and onto the liquid crystal display, thereby illuminating the screen. Most major home appliance companies manufacture rear project LCD TVs. Sometimes, these televisions can malfunction. Discover how to troubleshoot your LCD TV so you can get back to enjoying your favorite movie, television show or video game.

Instructions

    • 1

Check that the rear projection LCD television is plugged directly into an electrical outlet and not an extension cable. Such cables may not deliver the power required by the large TV, causing flickering or similar output problems. If your TV is far from an outlet, consider moving it.

    • 2

Make sure you are on the right input channel when using peripheral devices such as DVD players or video game consoles such as an Xbox or PlayStation. Blank screens when using such peripheral devices may be due to the TV not drawing its signal from the correct input option. Press the input button on your TV's remote control or on the TV display itself to toggle its input options until the screen for your peripheral device appears.

    • 3

Look for dead pixels. The liquid chemicals in a rear project LCD TV can sometimes not work correctly, causing strange colors or dark spots on the screen. Verify that these pixels are dead by changing the channel or switching movies. If the spot remains on the screen, it may be due to dead pixels. In such cases, the TV must be commercially serviced.

    • 4

Clean the rear projection LCD TV's front display. Dust, moisture and similar contaminates can refract the light emitted by the liquid crystals and distort your image quality and colors. Use a soft, dry cloth and wipe in overlapping horizontal or vertical strokes. Do not use glass cleaner or similar chemicals.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the LCD television display is properly balanced on your table or entertainment center to prevent it from falling over and breaking.

The channel "box" keeps on showing up in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. It first says 0- then AV5 then goes away. A couple times it has changed the TV's channel without us doing anything. Is there anyway to stop this from happening. Thank you.
