In preparation for Halloween, many people carve faces into pumpkins to make jack-o'-lanterns, but if you have small children at home you may want to try a fun project that doesn't involve a knife or candle. This year, try constructing pumpkin faces out of glitter. You can make a box to fill with Halloween treats or design a glitter face on a real pumpkin. . Does this Spark an idea?

  • Round cardboard box (available in craft stores)

Instructions

  1. Decorating a box

    • 1

Start by removing the lid from your box and using your pencil to draw a pumpkin face on the top. Next, outline the eyes, nose, mouth, teeth and rim of the lid with glue. Dust the black glitter over the glue and then shake off the excess.

    • 2

When the glue is dry, fill in the whites of the eyes and the whites of the teeth with glue. Shake the white glitter over those areas and blow off the excess. Allow that area to completely dry as well.

    • 3

Using the foam brush, apply glue to the rest of the face. Fill in the glue areas with the orange glitter. You can apply the same technique in whatever color you wish to the side rim of the box lid. The base of the box can be left as it is or painted black.

    Decorating a pumpkin

If you wish to paint a face onto the front of a pumpkin with glitter you can easily do this. You will need about five containers of orange glitter (more or less depending on the size of the pumpkin.) First, use a marker to outline the face on the front of the pumpkin.

    • 5

Just as you did with the box cover, outline the facial features with the glue, sprinkle glitter over them and allow them to dry.

    • 6

Paint the pumpkin with glue and sprinkle the orange glitter all over it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your face doesn't have to be orange; you can use whatever color glitter you please to make your pumpkin.

  • Never use flame around the glue or the glitter. The glue may ignite and the glitter will melt.
