How to Soundproof a Chrysler PT Cruiser

The PT Cruiser is a popular wagon sold by the Chrysler Corp. Unlike many other vehicles, the Cruiser's floor is flat, making it easy to reduce road noise by using soundproofing material. The floor design actually led the Environmental Protection Agency to classify it as a van rather than a car.

Things You'll Need

• Pliers
• Socket wrench set
• Dynamat (or equivalent sound dampener)
• Trim panel tool
• Replacement window seals (optional)

Instructions

1. 

   Begin by installing Dynamat or an equivalent material between the PT Cruiser's carpet and the floorboard. Remove the shift knob and the center console screws to remove the console. Remove the four bolts mounting each seat to the floor and remove the seats.

2. 

   Pull the carpet from under the side trim panels and roll it backward. Apply a layer of Dynamat across the front floor, then replace the carpet. Pull back the rear carpet to perform the same task.

3. Roll down each window and pull each rubber seal from the window frame housing. Install the new window seals. The seals are self-attaching and require no tools. As vehicles age, the window seals can dry-rot, allowing excessive wind noise into the vehicle.

4. Remove the rear cargo carpet and liner. Attach Dynamat to the floor and put the liner and carpet back in place. This will reduce the amount of exhaust noise in the vehicle.

Tips & Warnings

• There are several high-quality soundproofing materials available. Check with your local auto-parts store for alternatives to Dynamat.

• Keep track of all hardware when removing the seats and make sure you properly tighten the seat frames when reinstalling.
