How to Make Halloween Decorations With Garbage Bags
As the days start to get a little shorter and cooler, leaves begin falling to the ground, making our thoughts turn to Halloween. Decorating for Halloween has become as popular as decorating for Christmas, but many of the decorations can be expensive, and storing them after the holiday can be problematic. Making decorations from garbage bags solves both problems: garbage bags are relatively inexpensive, and when Halloween is over you can fill them with leaves from the yard and toss them to the curb. Does this Spark an idea?

Hanging Black Cat
-
1
Grasp a corner on the bottom of the bag and wind a twist tie 7 inches from the point. Repeat on the opposite bottom corner. These are your cat's ears.
-
2
Pour two bushel baskets full of leaves into the bag. Gather the garbage bag over the leaves to create a large ball shape. This is your cat's head. Add or remove leaves, if necessary. Wind a twist tie around the gathering. Pinch a small, 2-inch gather on the top of the head and wrap with a twist tie. Tie a 1-yard length of jute around the twist tie so you can hang your cat in a tree.

3
Cut long streamer strips from the opening of the bag to the neck of the cat, 2 inches wide. These will blow in the breeze, creating a spooky appearance.
-
4
Trace two circle eyes 2 inches in diameter and a 1-inch triangle nose on the yellow glow-in-the-dark contact paper. Cut them out and peel the backing from the shapes. Stick the nose in the center of the cat face and the eyes an inch above the nose and half an inch apart.
-
5
Use the yellow glow-in-the-dark dimensional paint to draw a smile below the triangle nose and three long whiskers on each side of the nose. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.
Black Garbage Bag Spider
-
6
Stuff one black bag with leaves to form the body. Gather the opening closed with a twist tie. Pour three bushel baskets full of leaves into another black bag for the head. Gather the opening and close with a twist tie. Place the body and the head side by side on the ground with the opening sides down.
-
7
Make the spider legs. Lay two unopened garbage bags end to end and overlapping slightly. Tape the bags together using black electrician tape. Fold the long sides over, overlap slightly and tape the long seam. Gather one end of the tube and wind a twist tie around it. Fill the tube with leaves, creating a leg. When the tube is half full, tie a twist tie around the tube. This will allow you to lift and position the spider legs. Continue to fill the the rest of the tube. Gather the end of the tube closed with a twist tie. Repeat for a total of eight legs.
-
8
Space and tape four legs to each side of the spider body using black electrician tape. Draw two circles 3 inches in diameter on the red contact paper and cut out. Peel the backing from the eyes and stick these to the front top of your spider's face, 2 inches apart. Cut two triangles from white contact paper, approximately 4 inches long. Peel the backing and stick these 2 inches below the eyes with the points facing down for wicked-looking spider teeth.
