Step 1
When looking for a SEO (Search Engine Optimization) company or professional there are a few main steps that will insure you get the best one that will not be a waste or time and money.
-
Step 2
First listen to their sales spill. If all they talk about is meta-tags and keywords they hangup the phone. If they promise top placement hangup the phone immediately. No one knows exactly how the search engines handle placement so there's not way they can guarantee placement to you.
Ask them for examples of websites they got on top of Google. Make sure the sites they show you are for hard to place keywords. 1 of 1 million results. The more results, the harder the keywords is to place. So make sure they got websites on top of hard keywords. You can see this at the top right of the results in Google. -
Step 3
Make sure they tell you how hard it is to get s site on top and then work to keep it there. They will of course be trying to sell you, but if they are honest they will hit on this topic.
Top key points are content building, meaning writing custom content/text for your pages that has not been ripped off from another site. This will only cause you to get in trouble with the search engines.
Good coding = W3C complaint code.
Build in-bound links = meaning people link to your website. Best if it is related websites link to yours. -
Step 4
Get the Google toolbar and install it. Find it by searching Google for toolbar. It has useful tools that tell you Page Rank and how many sites link to a certain site. You can use this to tool to look over your site. Research where your site comes up and which keywords you want to rank high in Google. You will need this when talking to the SEO people.
-
Step 5
Ask them about adding your site to DMOZ. If they don't know what this is, they aren't any good. All search engines look here. If they do know what DMOZ is, have them give you examples.
