Everyone wants to save gas these days. One of the simplest ways is to drive a well-tuned car. How do you know if your car needs a tune-up? If your gas mileage has decreased, a tune-up may be in order. Learn how to calculate your gas mileage in a few easy steps. All you need is a few numbers and a calculator.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper
  • Pencil or Pen
  • Calculator
  1. Step 1

Next time you fill your gas tank, write down your odometer mileage. Or, you can set your trip meter to zero.

  2. Step 2

When you fill your tank again, record the number of gallons it took to fill the tank.

  3. Step 3

Record the new odometer mileage. If you had set your trip meter to zero, simple record the number and skip to Step 5.

  4. Step 4

Subtract the first odometer reading from the second odometer reading for the number of miles driven since the first fill-up.

  5. Step 5

Take the number of miles driven and divide it by the number of gallons it took for the second fill-up. This is your gas mileage.

  6. Step 6

Periodically check your gas mileage. If your mileage changes more than 10%, you may want to consider a tune-up.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you compare your gas mileages, be sure to "compare apples to apples." Don't compare a week of highway driving to a week of city driving.
