How to Get MCSE Certified

The MCSE certification (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) is a popular Microsoft certification for professionals seeking information technology jobs such as systems engineer, technical support engineer, network analyst, systems analyst and technical consultant. The certification enables you to analyze business requirements and design and implement business solutions, based on the Microsoft Windows OS clients and Windows 2000 and 2003 Server operating systems. Having an MCSE certification proves your expertise in using Microsoft products and technologies, and it's a valuable asset to have on your resume.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 to 2 years of experience
  • Decide if the IT jobs that relate to the MCSE certification are for you. The MCSE certification is for those with one to two years of experience in installing, configuring, and troubleshooting network systems. If you're not qualified to pursue the MCSE, look into another Microsoft certification.

  • Determine which training is appropriate for you. There are online courses, such as the Microsoft Official Distance Learning; online Microsoft resources such as training portals and learning plans; self-paced training kits; or instructor-led courses such as a Microsoft Learning Partner, which features a classroom setting with certified instructors. They use Microsoft materials, such as a preparation guide, and are Microsoft-approved. Microsoft training could take up to a year.

  • Take advantage of practice exams for the MCSE certification. You can find them online or with an online class. The practice exams are the best way to test yourself and discover what areas you need to focus on in order to pass the exams.

  • Sign up to take the MCSE certification exams. There are seven exams altogether that you must pass; however, if you already have your MCSE on Windows 2000 Server, there are only two exams that you will need to pass to get the MCSE certification for 2003. Microsoft certification requires a passing score of 700 on all the exams. The exams will cover networking systems, client operating systems and design. The amount of information on the exams can be overwhelming and it won't be easy to pass all seven exams, so make sure you are prepared.

Tips & Warnings

  • After you pass the exams and become certified, you'll have a whole new window of opportunity. The MCSE certification is widely recognized by employers in the IT field.
  • Some of the exams featured in the certification process are retired and unavailable. However, if you have already taken such an exam and passed it, you can apply it to your MCSE certification.
