Cleaning out your garbage disposal should be a regular event. Old food particles, bacteria, and mold can grow rapidly in your garbage disposal. Bacteria and decomposing food can leave your sink smelling terrible. Garbage disposal deodorizer' s can be expensive. Here are a few easy steps to help you clean out and deodorize your garbage disposal.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Start with a clean garbage disposal. If your garbage disposal is draining slowly, clean your clogged garbage disposal first. Rinse your sink out with water as you run the garbage disposal for about a minute. Make sure all of the large chunks of food are gone and your disposal is empty. You should always have the water running whenever the garbage disposal is on. Running the disposal dry can damage the motor over time.

  2. Step 2

Fill your garbage disposal with ice. That's right, pack it completely full of the largest ice cubes you can get your hands on. Ice itself is not a garbage disposal deodorizer but it does do the hard work. The ice particles will fly around your garbage disposal acting as little scrubbers.

  3. Step 3

With the ice still in the disposal, fill the sink half way up with cold water. Using cold water will prevent the ice from melting as fast. Now mix in about 4 cups of baking soda. This is your garbage disposal deodorizer. The amount of baking soda will depend on the size of your sink. As a general rule the water should have a milky look to it.

  4. Step 4

With the water running, turn on your garbage disposal and let it do it's magic. The chunks of ice will scrub your disposal clean as the garbage disposal deodorizing baking soda water neutralizes bad odors. After all the ice is gone, let the water run for about a minute. I like to do this little "garbage disposal cleansing" about once every two weeks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Throwing your egg-shells in the garbage disposal is also a great way to clean it.
  • Never put meat in your disposal. Rotted meat particles can contain dangerous bacteria hazardous to your health.
