If you read the bible, you’ve probably found comfort, inspiration and answers in bible scripture. Some passages, however, may leave you feeling a little perplexed or uncertain as to their true meaning. Instead of just reading, perhaps you can find deeper meaning by meditating on the scripture.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need:

  • a bible
  • a comfortable place to sit
  • a quiet space
  1. Step 1

If you read the bible, you’ve probably found comfort, inspiration and answers in bible scripture. Some passages, however, may leave you feeling a little perplexed or uncertain as to their true meaning. Instead of just reading, perhaps you can find deeper meaning by meditating on the scripture.

  2. Step 2

Get your favorite bible and make yourself comfortable. You don’t want any distractions to interrupt your meditation on the scripture. Make sure the room is a comfortable temperature. Turn off any phones. Sit where you’ll be comfortable, yet not so cozy that you might fall asleep.

  3. Step 3

Select a favorite scripture. Perhaps you are seeking an answer to some obstacle in your life. Or perhaps you need inspiration today. Whatever your motivation, there is scripture you can select to help you in your particular need. This particular verse from Matthew 6:6 is especially thought-provoking and one I meditate on often: ‘But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret.”

  4. Step 4

Read the scripture several times, contemplating each word. Read it again in full then close your eyes.

  5. Step 5

Take several deep, circular breaths to calm your body and your spirit. Clear your mind of troubling thoughts and allow only the words of the scripture to remain. Don’t try to force any ‘meaning’ into the scripture. Remain relaxed and open as the scripture speaks to you.

  6. Step 6

Stay in your prayerful and meditative state for a while. I find that I cannot reach a deep, relaxed and waiting state in less than 30 minutes. However, if you haven’t waited this long before, you may have to work up to it.

  7. Step 7

When you have finished your meditation on the scripture, take several slow, deep breaths. Perhaps you found new meaning in the scripture you’ve read a thousand times before. If not, don’t worry, God’s guidance sometimes comes in ways we don’t expect and could never predict.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are many versions of the bible. Try to find one in a language that is easy for your to read and understand. My chosen bible verse was from the King James version of the bible.
