Propose with an onyx engagement ring she will love.

Onyx is an alternate birthstone for December birthdays and is associated with symbols of bonding, fidelity and strength. It is an ideal choice as an engagement ring if this type of stone is your girlfriend's taste, if she was born in December or if the month of December has special meaning to you, such as when you had your first date or when you plan to propose. Pay close attention to the quality of the stone you are choosing for her ring, making sure it is perfect before purchasing it.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a specific ring budget on the maximum amount you are willing to spend on the engagement ring, which may also include a matching wedding band. Setting the budget first will help you to find the perfect onyx ring you can afford.

    • 2

Find out her ring size to avoid having to get it resized later. You can either buy a ring sizer and find the size from a ring you know fits on her ring ringer, or ask someone close to her who might know, such as her mother, sister or friends.

    • 3

Look at her selection of rings to determine her favorite type of metal, either yellow gold, white gold or platinum. The majority of her rings will most likely be one of these types of metals and hint at what she prefers; if she has a bracelet or necklace she wears often, match the ring to that necklace. For instance, if her favorite necklace is sterling silver, choose an onyx engagement ring in a white gold setting.

    • 4

Decide on the style of setting you want for the onyx engagement ring. For instance, you may want a princess cut onyx in the center with two small diamonds on either side, or a heart-shaped onyx. Onyx has a hardness similar to diamond, so it is available in most of the same shapes as diamonds.

    • 5

Choose an onyx engagement ring that has been appraised for its value as well as has a report from a reputable gemological laboratory that shows the stone's authenticity. Pay attention to the 4C's on the report; cut, color, clarity and carat weight, to decide if the ring you have chosen is perfect for your future fiancee.
