The Ram is a popular full-size pickup truck built by Chrysler Corporation and sold under its Dodge brand. The Dodge Ram has been in production since 1981. The 2000 Dodge Ram was available with several different engine choices, two of which were equipped with distributor ignition systems.

Instructions

      Turn the engine off and open the hood. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Locate the distributor cap. The distributor cap on the 2000 Dodge Ram is located at the rear of the engine bay in the center.

      Label the plug wires on the distributor to note their location. The 3.7-liter engine will have six plug wires and the 5.2-liter engine will have eight. Disconnect the plug wires from the distributor cap.

      Use the socket wrench to remove the mounting bolts on each side of the distributor cap. Remove the old cap and set it aside. Wipe the contact plate between the distributor cap and the distributor rotor clean.

      Install the new distributor cap and replace the mounting bolts. Reconnect the plug wires according to your labels and reconnect the negative battery cable.

Tips & Warnings

  • The 2000 Dodge Ram was available with five different engines. The only two that use distributors are the 3.7-liter and the 5.2-liter. Replacement instructions are interchangeable between these two engines.

  • Be careful not to mislabel the plug wires. Connecting the plug wires to the wrong spot on the distributor cap can cause engine malfunction.
