How to Repair Copper Water Pipes
Copper water pipes need attention every once in awhile. It is best to learn what to watch for before problems arise. Repairing copper water pipes requires steps in sequence to complete the repair properly. In addition to the steps, you must also use the proper tools. Things You'll Need
- Copper pipe
- Pipe cutter
- Sandpaper
- Copper pipe couplers
- Propane torch
- Flux
- Solder

Mark the location of the leak in the copper water pipe, turn the water off and cut the pipe about 3 inches either side of the leak. Sand the ends of the pipe before applying flux to the ends.

Cut a new piece of copper pipe with the pipe cutter. Sand the ends.

Place the new copper pipe in a vise. Apply flux to one end and heat it with the propane torch while holding a coupler on it until it sucks the coupler on to it.

Place the solder at the end of the coupler that was sucked onto the new piece. Heat the solder, allowing it to drop onto the coupler, the flux will pull the solder between the coupler and new pipe.

Repeat Step 4 for the other end of the new piece after it cools. Then use the same method for securing the new piece on the existing copper pipe.

Tips & Warnings
Check the ends of the existing pipe for swelling with the coupler before cutting the new piece to ensure that enough of the old has been cut off. Be certain the work area is free of debris and clutter to avoid injury while working on the pipe.
Do not use a propane torch in tight places. Always be sure there is plenty of ventilation when using a propane torch.
