How to Put Air in Tubeless Turf Tires

Tubeless turf tires are made for lawn and garden equipment (for instance, lawn mowers). These tires differ from regular automotive tires in that they are not made for high speed travel. Because of this fact, they are not made to the same specifications as regular automobile tires. They have lower pressure tolerances, but are generally more rigid than automobile tires. When you buy new tubeless turf tires, it's a good idea to have an air compressor and a pressure gauge so that you can fill the tire with air periodically. The air is held inside the tire by the pressure forcing the air against the rim of the wheel, so proper pressure is essential in tubeless tires, to avoid premature tire failure.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the valve stem cover cap from the wheel. The valve stem cover is on the outside of the rim on the wheel and is what allows air to fill and pressurize the tire. Turn the cap counterclockwise to remove.

    • 2

Turn on the air compressor and set the PSI setting to an amount that is equivalent to the pressure rating on the tire. Check the tire rating by looking at the sidewall of your turf tire. There will be a notation "MAX AIR PRESSURE", which will be followed by a number and the notation "PSI". PSI stands for "pounds per square inch" and is a measure of the pressure you will be creating inside the tire. Setting the pressure on your air compressor will vary depending on the make and model of air compressor you have.

    • 3

Place the end of the air compressor hose fitting over the valve stem on the tire. Press the hose fitting onto the valve stem. You should hear the "whoosh" of air pressuring the tire at this point.

    • 4

Periodically remove the air compressor hose and check the air pressure in the with a pressure gauge. To do this, place the tip of the gauge over the valve stem and press it into the valve stem. The other end of the pressure gauge is fitted with a measuring device that will pop out of the end of the gauge when pressure from the tire is forced through the pressure gauge. Read the number on the gauge's measuring device that is closest to the handle of the gauge where the measuring device comes out of the handle of the gauge. This number indicates the pressure inside the tire.

    • 5

Stop filling the tire with air when you reach the "MAX AIR PRESSURE" indicated on the sidewall of the tire. Screw the valve stem cover cap back onto the valve stem and tighten it (hand-tight).

Tips & Warnings

  • For specific information on tire pressure specifications and proper tire sizes for your tractor or lawn equipment, consult the equipment manufacturer's service manual (see Resources).
