Windows XP SP2 included a number of settings to its firewall and antivirus programs as well as automatic update tool. Whenever these programs detect a missing component on your computer system, they notify you using pop-up balloons on the task bar. While these can prove helpful, they can also be annoying as they pop-up frequently even when you are not using the Internet. Disabling these pop-up balloons is a simple task that takes seconds to complete.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Click Start > Control Panel > Security Center. The Windows Security Center allows you to configure firewall and antivirus settings on your computer.

  2. Step 2

Click the "Change the Way Security Center alerts me" option on the left panel to open the Security Alerts window.

  3. Step 3

Uncheck the alert settings you want and click "OK" to save the changes. This will prevent balloon pop-ups from showing up on the task bar.
