If you routinely paint automobiles in a body shop or at your home, you may need to purchase a spray paint gun. These guns come with all the necessary tools for a custom paint job.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine the type of spray paint gun you need. You can choose to buy the gun alone or purchase a kit that includes the cups, tips and air regulators required for operation. If you purchase the gun by itself, you need to purchase these items individually.

  2. Step 2

Find online retailers. Spray Gun World and Ketone.com sell spray paint guns for cars produced by DeVilbiss, Iwata, Finex and Asturo AOM.

  3. Step 3

Examine the tips included with the spray paint gun. The lower-numbered tips are used to apply water-based paints, while the higher-numbered tips are used for latex, thick enamels and lacquers. The average range of tip sizes is 1.0 to 2.2.

  4. Step 4

Examine the cup sizes included with the spray paint gun; you'll need a range of sizes to complete different paint jobs. Smaller cup sizes are used for small areas of the vehicle while the larger cups can be used for complete paint jobs. Sizes you can expect to find include 125 ml, 600 ml and 1,000 ml.

  5. Step 5

Purchase any necessary accessories. At the least, you should purchase a cleaning kit and carrying case.
