In this article I'll tell you how to register your dog with the American Kennel Club (AKC). If you take the time and effort to buy a purebred dog, you probably plan to have the dog registered. I'm going to address how to register your dog with the (AKC) because it's the oldest purebred dog registry in America. Some breeders see registration with the AKC as a seal of quality for their puppies. Others see it as a marketing tool. Whatever your reason the following steps explain how to register your dog with the American Kennel Club.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Knowing how to register your dog with the American Kennel Club is the easy part. Finding a reliable breeder can be the tricky part. Do some homework to find a reliable breeder to buy a purebred dog from. A puppies parentage can be brought into question if the breeder hasn't maintained quality control over breeding or if a breeder commits fraud by lying about a dogs parentage.

  2. Step 2

After a reliable breeders registered, purebred dog has had puppies, the breeder will register the dog with the AKC. The AKC in turn sends a blue slip to the breeder for each puppy in the litter.

  3. Step 3

When you purchase a purebred dog from a breeder he or she should sign the blue slip over to you. Then you register the dog with the AKC in your name and get a registration certificate. An individual registration cost $10.00 and registration for a litter is $20.00.

  4. Step 4

Taking care of your new purebred puppy can help ensure years of mutual affection as you bond with your dog. "The Complete Dog Book and AKC Dog Care and Training Book," is a great resource to help you care for your dog. It may be well worth it to purchase this or some other guide to help care for your dog. These guides may help you decide if you are ready and able to buy and register a dog with the American Kennel Club.
