Step 1
First to figure out which classes you're going to take look at what is required for your graduation plan. Most schools have a catalog of courses required for each major. Think of which classes you would like and check their availability.
-
Step 2
Once you've narrowed it down a little, ask around campus. Ask friends, fellow class mates, or advisers about classes. Ask about the course content, difficulty, relevance, boring-ness level, how hard the exams were and so on. Ask your friends who they took it from and whether they liked the professor or not.
-
Step 3
Take a look at the syllabus. You can get a syllabus usually if you contact the professor. A former student might still have one laying around. Department chairs might have copies. Pay attention to what is required. How many tests, papers, quizzes, homework assignment, etc. are there? And how are they laid out during the course of the semester. Do you have a paper and a final exam all in the last 2 weeks of class?
-
Step 4
Use ratemyprofessors.com Find your professor and see what others have to say about him/her.
Type professor reviews in google and there will be a listing of possibly helpful websites.
A great tool to find out more online is myedu.com or pickaprof.com This is a great tool to finding out more. It used to be free, but they are in the process of merging together and charging $10/month. Here you'll find more information about the class. Like what it covers. You can get reviews and ratings from multiple people about the professor and their likes and dislikes. -
Step 5
When you've gathered all the necessary information now it's a personal decision. Do you want to take the class for the easy A? If so take the easy class. If you want to learn the most and have a challenge, then take the challenging course from the challenging professor.
-
Step 6
Once you've figured it out, sign up for the class. And enjoy a hopefully better semester now that you've handpicked your schedule.
