Make a square pattern from cardboard to help you cut your fleece. A good size would be 8 or 10 inches. Draw the outline and the cardboard and cut out the pattern.
A fleece rag quilt makes a great homemade gift, even if you can't sew. And if you can sew, this project is one that you can carry with you and work on when you are away from your sewing room. You might discover that you like this quilt so much that you want one for yourself. Involve your kids with this project, too.
Things You'll Need
- Fleece in various colors
Use the pattern to mark and cut out as many blocks as you need for your quilt. For a 36-by-36-inch lap quilt, use 81 of the 8-inch squares. Cut out more for larger quilts and less for smaller quilts, such as for dolls. Decide on a pattern so you know how many squares you need of each color. Take this chance to use scraps from your fabric stash.
Mark a new square on your pattern that's 2 inches smaller on all sides. Cut out the inner square.
Make a mark every 1/2 inch around the sides of the smaller square pattern.
Center the new smaller pattern on top of a fleece block. Cut fringes in the outer 2 inches of the fleece by cutting from the edge of the fabric every 1/2 inch to line up with the marks on the pattern.
Arrange the cut and fringed blocks on the floor or table in a pleasing pattern.
Begin tying the blocks together using the fringed pieces on each block. Tie one block to the next, making sure to get the ties on the top of the quilt. When two squares are neatly tied together, you will have a nice seam on one side and a rag look on the top. Continue tying all of the squares together until the quilt is complete.
Finish the quilt by tying the fringes on the outside pieces, if you like. Alternatively, you can leave them unknotted.
Tips & Warnings
- Make a 3-by-3 quilt using 10-inch squares and use it as an oversize tic-tac-toe board.
- The smaller the pattern, the more cutting and tying is needed and the longer it will take to complete.
