Must have disco ball
Must have disco ball

Set up for a good time with these ideas.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • disco ball
  • special effects lights
  • Slide projector
  • Velvet rope
  • Mylar space blankets
  1. Step 1

    Put up a disco ball.
You can't have a 70s disco without one. Don't cheap out. Get one that spins, and actually reflects dots of light onto the walls. If you're doing a dance party, just dim lights and a good disco ball will transform the space.

  2. Step 2
    Disco Colored Lights

Look into other light effects. Most night clubs are in stripped down spaces that only get interesting with lighting. You can get multi-color lamps, black lights and strobe lights for less than you might think. If you're using black light, some detergent glows under black light. You can paint soapy water designs onto white walls you're not too concerned about and it will only be visible under black light.

  3. Step 3

Do a slide show of famous disco artists, and some stills from Saturday Night Fever.

  4. Step 4

If it's a big party, search for cars for sale near you that were built in the 70s. Let the owners know about the party and tell them they are welcome to park in front with for sales signs up. Avoid super expensive cars. You don't want liability issues if the party gets out of hand.

  5. Step 5

Make silver curtains by shredding Mylar space blankets. Use these to cover anything you don't want to show, or make a backdrop on the stage.

  6. Step 6

For an added touch look in thrift stores and friend's attics or basements for 70s era decor and furniture. It hasn't been that long so quite a bit of it is still out there.

  7. Step 7

To make centerpieces, spray paint bare sticks gold, put them in vases, then hang mini disco balls from them. Alternatively make a 70s Andy Warhol reference, and use empty tomato soup cans as vases.

  8. Step 8

Put a red rope out front. Studio 54 got famous by not letting people pass the velvet rope. You'll probably have to use a streamer made to look like one. The real thing is expensive.

  9. Step 9

If you have a big budget rent a dance floor that's lighted from below. You can't go wrong re-creating the club from Saturday Night Fever.
