Increase Your speed on the Internet
Increase Your speed on the Internet

Sometimes it seems that web pages and downloads can take forever to complete. Here are some tips on how to speed up your internet experience.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An internet conection
  1. Step 1

Consider changing your browser. Some browsers are faster than others. I would recommend to have 2 installed: Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Chrome is the fastest browser (for PCs) but it still have some small compatibility issues. If you use chrome for almost everything and Firefox for those little times where Chrome doesn't work, you will increase your speed on at least 10%.
Check the links to download Google Chrome

  2. Step 2

Set up your spam filters. A lot of times, email becomes a pain due to the enormous amount of spam. Real messages get lost in a sea of senseless emails. Taking 5 minutes of setting your spam filters, will ensure that you will save hours going your messages. Use the folders! Keeping the number of messages in your inbox to a minimum will increase the loading speed of your email.

  3. Step 3

If given the choice between a page in Flash or in HTML, choose the HTML version. HTML will load faster, with less plugins. Besides all those nice Flash animations can get really old after a couple of times.

  4. Step 4

If you are playing online games, try to close all other internet applications. This seems to be a no brainer, but sometimes programs like instant messenger or chat programs are running in the background, eating away your speed. Close them, and you connection will get better.

  5. Step 5

Turn off that virus protection! Turning off your 'internet protection' will speed up your navigation. However, you must be very careful to not download anything that might be harmful and not to access web sites labeled as 'potentially dangerous'. Some search engines like Yahoo or Google will tell you which websites are dangerous, and which ones aren't.

  6. Step 6

Run a Spyware/Malware scan weekly. This will help you ensure that there are no programs eating your bandwith, or data mining you. There are plenty of free options out there. Doing this will not only increase your navigation speed, but it will also protect your computer

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful of what websites you access, and even more careful on what you download or install on your computer.
  • If you turn your antivirus/internet protection software be sure that you understand what are you doing. Avoid dangerous websites and be extra careful with downloads/installs.
