When you first start your Windows XP computer, a welcome screen appears. After a short pause, it is supposed to disappear and allow the operating system to continue loading. Occasionally, your computer may get hung up in the welcome screen and stop responding. According to Microsoft support, this problem is most often caused by a known bug with the hibernate mode in Windows.
Restart your computer.
Press the F8 key repeatedly while your computer is restarting. This will attempt to start Windows in safe mode.
A screen will display that says, "System restart has been paused." The message offers you a choice. You can continue restarting your system, or you can delete restoration data. Select the option to delete system restoration data.
At the boot menu that appears, select the option to boot into normal mode. Your computer should successfully load Windows.
